Barbaresco is Nebbiolo's other great expression, and often the more approachable of the two. The aromatic signature is the same — rose, tar, red cherry — but the frame is softer and comes around years sooner. Piedmont, in Italy's northwest, is Nebbiolo's home ground and produces some of the country's longest-lived reds. This is the 2021 from Pio Cesare. A shorter decant than Barolo needs — thirty to sixty minutes. Good with roast poultry, pasta with truffle, and firm cheeses.
