Carmignano, just west of Florence, was blending Cabernet with Sangiovese long before the Super Tuscans, and it was among the first Italian wine zones to have its boundaries legally defined, back in 1716. Piaggia is one of the appellation's leading estates. Expect dark cherry, blackcurrant, violets and dried herbs, with a firm, polished structure. Piaggia, 2021 vintage, a Riserva with extra aging before release. Decant for an hour. Serve with roast lamb, bistecca, or wild boar ragù.
