TD-9 is named for the old International Harvester tractor the Shafer family used when they arrived in Stags Leap in 1972 — and the wine is a deliberate nod to the Napa blends of that era, Cabernet Sauvignon filled out with Merlot and Malbec rather than bottled alone. The result is softer and more perfumed than a varietal Cabernet, and more drinkable young. A good introduction to Shafer without the cellaring commitment.
