The Celts introduced vines approximately 3,000 years ago. Austrian Wine went through a major scandal in 1985 and due to it’s now strict quality standards has emerged as one of the top countries in the world in terms of production standards.
There are 35 approved grape varieties in Austria - 22 of them fall within the white wine category, of which Grüner Veltliner is the quintessential wine.
Austrian wine is for those who like delicately perfumed aromatics and mouth-watering acidity with great elegance and acidity. Despite being known for white wines, there is also a richer side of Austrian wine with red wine that can be made very opulent with oak-aging.
