Laphroaig is the benchmark for Islay's heavily peated style, and it makes no attempt to be gentle about it — iodine, seaweed, medicinal smoke, and a sweetness underneath that keeps it from being one-dimensional. People tend to either fall for it immediately or never come around. Drink it neat, or with a few drops of water to lift the aromatics. Traditionally paired with oysters, blue cheese, or nothing at all.
